Describe your idea: Government departments and the police already hold data useful to people wanting to buy used cars. For example:

* DVLA – Data describing the appearance of a car, road tax details

* VOSA – MOT results, vehicle changes, mileage data, details of write offs

* Police – Stolen vehicle database

The prototype Free Car Check service can already gather some of this data, but write off details and the stolen vehicles listing seem difficult to access. With the right help from government this could be made available to make a highly useful service

What problem does it solve?: Giving this information away freely would help consumers find out if the vehicle they are about to buy has had any serious problems. Additionally some vehicle data companies charge large amounts of money for data created by government authorities – taxpayers shouldn’t have to pay for data gathered with their money!
