Describe your idea: I would like to propose a Consumer Focus Checked company status /chartermark / certificate for data recovery companies.
What problem does it solve?: There are a number of companies which claim to have the skills and facilities needed to carry out the repair and rebuild of hard drives, but in reality they often destroy any chance of a full recovery.
Such companies should be visited and checked by an impartial organisation.
There are too many victims of rogue operations, and it affects home users and businesses.
We get calls from victims of one group on a daily basis, and despite contacting trading standards, the OFT, and ASA.
This would help consumers if companies dealing with their data are inspected and issued a charter mark or company checked by consumer focus certificate.

Re:- Proposeed Data Recovery Company Checking
Fully support this idea as I have been a victim of one such outfit recently. After taking my money, the hard drive involved was returned to me completely destroyed with the bald comment “no data recoverable”!
