Describe your idea: We all have a role in reducing and mitigating against our changing climate. However there is a lack of authoritative information on the impact of many of the goods that we buy.
I’ve been impressed with the Government/EU database on vehicle emissions. Couldn’t we have a similar source for all goods ?
Lets start with those using energy or water
What problem does it solve?: Identify for all white or electrical goods how much CO2 they use. This would give a heirarchy of products so that customers could make informed decisions on the impact the products they buy will make on CO2 emissions. For example we now know that despite water being a very heavy product and we each use 150 litres each a day at home – the biggest energy use is not in delivering it to the tap – its the impact of heating it in the home. Wouldn’t it be good if consumers realised this and only bought the most efficient heating appliances ?

Hi Rob,
We liked your idea of a website for listing the carbon emissions for various appliances. The Energy Saving Trust (http://www.energysavingtrust.co.uk) website contains details of some appliances including kettles, washing machines, tumble dryers and heating systems.
We are hoping to work with the Energy Saving Trust over the next few months to make this data more readily available through an API.
